By your humble correspondent in Corinth, the fifth day before the Ides of the month of harvest, in the year of the emperor’s fifteenth tribunician power

News has reached the docks of Corinth that a certain Galilean teacher stood in the temple courts of Jerusalem and told a story so pointed the chief priests and Pharisees tried to arrest him on the spot.

A landowner, the teacher said, planted a vineyard, put a wall around it, dug a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. At harvest he sent a servant to collect his share of the fruit. The tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. He sent another. They struck that one on the head. He sent still more. Some they beat, some they killed. Finally the owner said, “I will send my beloved son. They will respect him.”

The tenants saw the heir coming and said to one another, “This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.” So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

What, the teacher asked the crowd, will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

The temple leadership knew at once the story was aimed at them. In Corinth we understand land, tenants, and inheritance law rather well. A patron who keeps sending agents after the first three have been assaulted is either a fool or a man of terrifying patience. The tenants’ logic is the kind of short-term cleverness that ends with crucifixion or the arena. Yet the Galilean told it in the very courts the tenants currently controlled.

Echoes Across the Ages

This is not a new story. It is the old story wearing new clothes.

Centuries earlier the prophet Isaiah sang of a vineyard that belonged to the Lord of hosts. He cleared it, planted it with choice vines, built a watchtower, and hewed out a wine vat. He looked for justice and found bloodshed; for righteousness and heard a cry. The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His pleasant planting. Judgment was already spoken over that vineyard long before any Galilean teacher stood in the temple.

The servants sent to collect the fruit are the long line of prophets. Generation after generation they arrived with the same message. Generation after generation they were beaten, mocked, or killed. The pattern is so consistent that later writers could speak of “the blood of the prophets from Abel to Zechariah” as a single continuous debt.

Then comes the final, almost reckless act: the owner sends the son. Not another servant. The heir. The one whose very presence announces that the time of patience is ending. The tenants’ response is the logical climax of the entire pattern, if you have already killed the messengers, the only way to keep the vineyard is to eliminate the heir.

And the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. The teacher closed the parable with the ancient psalm that every pilgrim knew. The rejected one becomes the foundation. The vineyard is taken away and given to others.

Modern Blind Spot

Most modern readers hear a gentle lesson about stewardship or “giving God His due.” First-century ears heard a public death sentence pronounced on the current management of the vineyard, delivered to their faces in their own courts. The humor, if one can call it that, is the tenants’ absolute confidence that murdering the heir will finally secure what the owner has never surrendered.

Biblical Shocking Takeaway The vineyard was never theirs to keep. The only question left is whether the new tenants will produce the fruit the owner has always required.

Rush the shores, where the tenants’ logic has been weighed and found crazy.

The Minor Prophets form one unified scroll. Their voices rise together against pride, injustice, and despair, always pointing toward the Day of the Lord. This week the focus narrows to one man who refuses to stay on the ground. Habakkuk climbs a watchtower and stations himself there until he receives an answer.

He is not only a prophet we study. He is a man living through real crisis, and the vantage point he takes is the same one you and I are still called to occupy.

The Climb

Habakkuk begins with honest complaint. Violence multiplies. Justice is twisted. The Biblical Law is set aside. He asks the questions that still live in every heart that longs for righteousness:

“How long, O Lord, shall I cry for help and You will not hear? Why do You make me see iniquity?”

God’s answer is more startling than the silence. “Look among the nations and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans…”

The instrument of judgment will be a nation more ruthless than the one being judged. The near horizon comes into clear view. Babylon is coming, and the first waves of that judgment would arrive within only a few years. The time is no longer distant.

Stationed on the Watchtower

Habakkuk does not turn away. He climbs higher.

“I will take my stand at my watchtower and station myself on the tower and look out to see what He will say to me.”

In the ancient world the tower was the place of far sight. From the ground you see only what is immediately in front of you. From the tower you can see the dust of approaching armies while there is still time to prepare. Habakkuk takes that higher vantage point. The watchtower is not a place of safety or distance. It is the place of clear seeing, the posture you must take when the near judgment is already moving and the final Day of the Lord still waits for its appointed time.

From that height both horizons become visible at once: the armies already on the march, and the glory that will one day fill the earth as the waters cover the sea.

The Word That Comes While Watching

While Habakkuk watches, the word arrives. The vision is made plain so that a runner may read it. It is for an appointed time. It will not delay. And in the middle of the five woes against the arrogant comes the sentence that becomes a hinge for the entire Book of the Twelve and for the New Testament itself:

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

This is the only way to remain on the watchtower. The near judgment is certain. The far fulfillment is certain. The length of the wait is not given. Therefore the righteous live by faith, not by sight, not by full understanding, and not by favorable circumstances.

The Psalm from the Tower

Chapter 3 is not another oracle. It is a psalm.

It is introduced as “a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth.” It carries the marks of temple worship: the word Selah and the final instruction, “To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.” The language rises into classic theophanic poetry, the Divine Warrior advancing, mountains trembling, the sun and moon standing still. The man who climbed the watchtower in distress now leads the people of God in a song that can be taken up by the whole assembly.

Near the end of that psalm Habakkuk faces the full weight of barrenness:

“Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”

The fig tree here is not a minor detail. In the language of the covenant, a barren fig tree is a sign of a people who have produced no fruit of righteousness. Habakkuk is looking at a Judah that has become barren, and he knows the near judgment is already on the way. Centuries later Jesus will stand before another fruitless fig tree on the road into Jerusalem and use it as a living sign that the time of judgment has drawn near. Both prophets confront the same people with the same urgent truth: the fruit is missing, and the time is near.

Habakkuk does not wait for the fig tree to blossom again before he rejoices. He accepts the barrenness, accepts the nearness of the judgment, and still chooses to root his joy in the God of his salvation. The Lord Himself is the true high tower of strength.

The Same Stage, the Same Call

The vision Habakkuk received still waits for its final appointed time. Jesus Christ is the Righteous One who lived by perfect faith. In Him the kingdom has broken in, yet the last Day of the Lord has not yet arrived. The glory that will fill the earth is still future. The armies of arrogance still move across the world.

If…IF…we are living in the last days, then you stand on the same watchtower Habakkuk occupied. The near rumbles of judgment and the far certainty of God’s triumph are both in view. The word spoken to the man on the tower is spoken directly to you:

The righteous shall live by his faith.

Living on the Watchtower

The call is not to come down. The call is to take the posture of far sight. Keep your eyes open. Keep your heart steady. Refuse both despair and false security. Watch. Wait. Live by faith in the God who has already declared the end from the beginning, even when the fig tree does not blossom. He Himself is your strong tower.

Later I will turn on a Progressive Web App (PWA) feature. Readers who wish can install it to their home screen so it opens full-screen, without browser chrome, and can support offline reading and push notifications. It becomes app-like with a direct connection if readers desire one.

I know this choice makes the road harder. Without a large platform connecting people, reaching readers on the open web requires far more deliberate effort. Still, the freedom to own 100% of what is produced, and to decide how it lives and travels, is worth the extra lifting.

At some point a person has to choose a sustainable path forward…and change is a part of living. This post is both information and an honest request for your continued presence.

What this means and the timeline

I am sending this out about five to six weeks ahead of the actual transition so you have time to prepare.

• I will finish the current series on the Minor Prophets here on Substack. Once that discussion is complete, there will be a clean cutoff.

• From that point forward, all new writing will appear on my own site.

Word has reached Antioch that the Nazarene, still traveling toward Jerusalem, told a parable yesterday that has left entire hiring crews arguing into the night. A vineyard owner, He said, went out early to hire workers for a denarius. He returned at the third hour, the sixth, the ninth, and finally at the eleventh hour, when only a sad little cluster of men remained, already practicing the ancient art of going home with nothing.

He hired them anyway.

At sundown the owner paid the last men first, giving each a full denarius. Those who had borne the heat of the whole day fully expected the universe to correct the math. It did not. They received the same coin. Grumbling erupted like a cracked amphora left too long in the sun.

The owner’s reply, according to the Teacher, was simple and devastating: “Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?”

The marketplace is still buzzing.
Some call the story divine mercy. Others call it the single most efficient way
ever invented to make honest men question every life decision that led them to
show up before breakfast. A few are beginning to suspect the vineyard Owner in
the story is not merely a character.

Voices from the Street

A Stoic spice merchant, arms crossed so tightly his elbows nearly touched: “Epictetus was clear. The only thing truly ours is our judgment. These men chained their peace to a wage scale the owner never promised. They suffered twice: once in the sun, and once in the far more efficient furnace of their own envy. Classic. And yet the Nazarene tells it as if envy itself is the real problem.”

A Pharisee from the synagogue court, already drafting the complaint: “The Torah is unambiguous about honest scales. Equal pay for unequal work is how moral order slowly dissolves into porridge. If the last receive the same as the first, what incentive remains for the diligent? This teaching softens the spine of the covenant until it can no longer stand upright. And He dares to put it in the mouth of the Owner.”

A Roman freedman who once managed an estate near Daphne: “In my day the master paid what he contracted and nothing more. Generosity to idlers is not virtue. It is an open invitation for every lazy hand in the province to arrive at the eleventh hour looking virtuous. If the Nazarene is right, the entire system of patronage is wearing a halo it has not earned.”

An older day laborer who worked from dawn, still holding his denarius like evidence at a trial: “I bent my back twelve hours. He bent his for one. Same coin. Tell me that does not sting the honor of a working man. Tell me the sun didn’t notice. And tell me why this Teacher keeps saying the Owner is free to do it.”

Kingdom Takeaway

The Kingdom does not run on the ledger of human fairness. It runs on the scandalous freedom of the Owner who pays the last the same as the first and still has the nerve to call both “friend.”

The Nazarene is not merely describing that Owner. He is revealing Himself.

The Minor Prophets thunder with a unified message: the Day of the Lord is coming. God will confront every form of pride and oppression, bring perfect justice, and establish His kingdom in fullness. In this series we listen to these often-overlooked voices. This week we turn to Nahum, a short but powerful oracle that brings fierce comfort to the afflicted and a clear warning to the cruel.

The Divine Warrior Rises

Nahum prophesied in the late seventh century BC as the Assyrian Empire, centered in the great city of Nineveh, seemed invincible. For generations Assyria had terrorized the ancient Near East with ruthless conquest, deportation, and brutality. Judah had suffered under its shadow. Yet God had not forgotten His people. Through Nahum He declares that the time of patient mercy has run its course.

The book opens with one of the most majestic theophanies in Scripture, a vivid portrait of the Lord as the Divine Warrior: jealous for His own, slow to anger yet great in power, and one who “will by no means clear the guilty” (Nahum 1:3). Mountains quake, the earth trembles, and the seas dry up before Him. No empire, no matter how fortified, can stand against this God.

A Tale of Two Encounters with Nineveh

The power of Nahum deepens when read alongside the book of Jonah. The same city that repented under Jonah’s preaching and received mercy now faces final judgment. God’s patience is real, but it is not endless. Nineveh’s return to violence and arrogance sealed its fate. As you have done, it will be done to you, the same principle Obadiah proclaimed against Edom echoes here against systemic cruelty on a grand scale.

Nahum delivers this message in soaring prophetic poetry: vivid battle scenes, taunts against the fallen lion of Assyria, and a sudden word of hope. “Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace!” (Nahum 1:15). The oppressor will pass through no more.

Biblical Echoes

This is no isolated word. It stands in the stream of God’s self-revelation in Exodus 34:6–7, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, yet one who will by no means clear the guilty. Jonah appealed to the mercy side of that revelation; Nahum proclaims the justice side when mercy is spurned. The good news of deliverance on the mountains also echoes Isaiah’s promise (Isaiah 52:7), pointing forward to a greater announcement of peace and salvation.

The Day of the Lord

Nahum’s vision holds two horizons. Near at hand, the brutal Assyrian capital would fall in 612 BC, just as prophesied, an overwhelming flood, desolation, and the end of its endless cruelty. Yet the book looks further: every proud power that crushes the weak will one day meet the same righteous judgment. The Day of the Lord clears the way for restoration.

Christ and the Kingdom

In Jesus Christ these threads converge. He is the greater Jonah, three days in the heart of the earth, then rising in triumph to proclaim victory over every evil empire, beginning with sin and death. He is the Divine Warrior who defends the oppressed and the stronghold for all who take refuge in Him. Through His death and resurrection the kingdom has broken in, and at His return every “Nineveh” will be fully humbled and every wrong set right.

Living in the Light of This Word

Nahum calls us to examine where we place our trust. No empire of cruelty or personal fortress of self-reliance can stand before the Lord. For the weary and oppressed, the message rings with hope: God sees. He is not indifferent.

Here is unshakable confidence for every believer: the Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him, and the same mighty God who brought down Nineveh reigns today and will bring every promise to completion in Jesus Christ, our conquering King.

In a world still marked by injustice and oppression, we do not despair or retaliate in kind. We hide ourselves in the only secure refuge and walk in quiet trust that God’s justice is perfect and His kingdom unshakable.

The Minor Prophets, those twelve short books tucked at the end of the Old Testament, often feel like hidden gems. Together they form one unified scroll in the ancient Scriptures, a chorus of voices crying out against idolatry, injustice, and pride while pointing toward God’s ultimate restoration. In this new series, Forgotten Voices, we turn to seven of these lesser-preached books to uncover their urgent messages for today.

At the heart of the Minor Prophets runs a powerful unifying thread: the Day of the Lord. This is the moment when God confronts human pride and oppression, brings justice, and establishes His kingdom in fullness. The series begins with the shortest book in the entire Old Testament, Obadiah, which delivers its message with striking poetic intensity.

Obadiah: A Concise Oracle of Justice

Obadiah likely spoke after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Edom, Judah’s neighbor to the southeast and descendant of Esau, had betrayed their “brother” nation. Instead of offering aid during Babylon’s invasion, the Edomites gloated, looted, and handed over fleeing Judeans. God’s response through Obadiah is direct and unflinching.

The book unfolds as a poetic oracle: rhythmic, parallel lines that hammer home the message with memorable force:

“As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.” (Obadiah 15)

Pride led Edom to feel secure in its mountain strongholds (“Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” v. 4). Yet the very violence and betrayal they committed would return upon them. The book moves from specific judgment on Edom to a broader vision: the Day of the Lord against all nations, culminating in hope “the kingdom shall be the Lord’s” (v. 21).

Read aloud, Obadiah’s brevity and intensity give it an almost song-like quality, even if it is not formally structured as a psalm like Habakkuk 3. Its poetic parallelism and vivid imagery place it firmly in the tradition of Hebrew prophetic poetry.

Scriptural Connections

Obadiah does not stand alone. Its language closely parallels Jeremiah 49:7–22, suggesting a shared prophetic tradition concerning Edom. Amos earlier condemned Edom for “pursuing his brother with the sword” and casting off all pity (Amos 1:11). These connections highlight the consistent biblical witness: God notices betrayal, especially when it targets His people.

The themes also echo certain Psalms that cry out for justice against arrogant enemies and celebrate the Lord’s sovereign rule. Obadiah’s closing declaration of the kingdom carries a triumphant, worshipful tone that resonates with the Psalter’s praise of God’s kingship.

The Prophetic View: The Day of the Lord

Obadiah presents both a near-term fulfillment, Edom’s eventual downfall, and a far horizon. The Day of the Lord brings low every proud power. No mountain fortress or human alliance can withstand divine justice. Yet the book does not end in despair. Judgment clears the way for restoration. Mount Zion will be holy, and the kingdom belongs to the Lord.

This forward gaze is characteristic of the Minor Prophets. Obadiah sets the stage for the series: pride and injustice meet their end, while God’s people find comfort in His faithful rule.

Christ and the Kingdom

In the light of the New Testament, Obadiah’s message finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Edom stands as a type of “all arrogant opposition” to God’s people and God’s purposes. The kingdom that Obadiah declares belongs to the Lord, is the very kingdom Jesus proclaimed and established through His death and resurrection.

As Revelation 11:15 declares, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” In Christ, the final Day of the Lord brings perfect justice and complete restoration. Every betrayal is answered, every proud power is humbled, and God’s redeemed people dwell securely in His presence.

Application for Today

Obadiah calls us to examine our own hearts. Where do pride, gloating over others’ misfortune, or subtle betrayal linger? In a world quick to mock the fallen and slow to show mercy, this short oracle cuts through self-deception.

The book comforts the oppressed with a clear prophetic view: God sees every injustice and will set all things right. No hidden betrayal escapes His notice. At the same time, it warns the complacent: no position of security whether mountain stronghold, wealth, or status can shield us from accountability.

Two realities stand certain at the return of Christ: perfect justice for every wrong, and the triumphant arrival of the kingdom that belongs to the Lord. This dual hope calls believers to humility, vigilance, and trust in God’s timing rather than retaliation or despair.

In the face of pride, betrayal, and injustice, we can stand with quiet confidence in the Lord. God’s Word is sure, His justice perfect, and His kingdom unshakable. The same God who spoke through Obadiah reigns today and will bring every promise to completion in Christ.

By your humble correspondent in Jerusalem, the 12th day of the month of Tammuz, in the 17th year of Tiberius Caesar.

JERUSALEM - Yesterday at the Temple, two very different men went up to pray. One was a first-rate, card-carrying Pharisee: star of the purity league, fasting twice weekly while the rest of us managed once a year on Yom Kippur. The other? A tax collector. Yes, that kind: the fellow who’d cheerfully auction off his grandmother’s goat to meet Rome’s quota and still pocket enough for a new villa.

The Pharisee planted himself front and center like a victorious general and launched into his prayer with all the flair of a Greek orator on opening night: “God, I thank You that I am not like other men, robbers, evildoers, adulterers, or even like this tax collector over here. I fast twice a week. I tithe everything, right down to the spices in my cupboard.” One could almost hear the heavenly choir warming up for his victory lap.

A short distance away, the tax collector couldn’t even lift his eyes to heaven. He stood there beating his chest like a man who’d just realized his entire ledger was written in disappearing ink and muttered, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

According to the Galilean teacher who witnessed the whole affair, the tax collector, not the spiritual all-star, went home justified. The proud man’s prayer apparently bounced off the Temple ceiling, while the humble one slipped straight through to the Throne. In a city full of honor-shame scorekeeping, this was the equivalent of the underdog beating the champion with a single quiet sentence.

The reversal has everyone buzzing. Pharisees are the respected Torah commandos of Judea, heroes who kept the faith alive under Roman boots (Josephus himself notes their sway with the common people). Tax collectors? Professional collaborators who bid for the right to wring coins from their neighbors for Caesar’s coffers. They make Roman toll booths look like charity drives.

Even the Stoics might raise an eyebrow. Epictetus spent his days drilling students on mastering inner judgment over external show, while here a man who mastered nothing but regret found favor. The Pharisee offered God a résumé. The tax collector offered a broken heart.

Guess which one the Almighty preferred?

Cultural Shocks Most Modern Readers Miss

1. The “good guy” was the villain of the story. Pharisees were the devout overachievers everyone admired, not lazy hypocrites. Jesus flipped the script on the most respected religious professionals of the day.

2. Tax collectors were basically ancient IRS agents with swords. They bought the right to overcharge their own people for Roman taxes. Showing up at the Temple was like a loan shark attending a holiness convention.

3. Prayer wasn’t private therapy. It was public performance art. Standing tall with hands raised signaled “I’ve got this, God.” The tax collector’s distant, chest-beating posture screamed public shame, exactly the opposite of what respectable worship looked like.

4. God doesn’t grade on spiritual effort points. In a world of patronage, public piety, and visible status, Jesus said the quiet, desperate plea from the back row carried more weight than the polished speech from center stage.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. After the initial light and its separation from darkness, the account continues with deliberate order. God speaks separations that establish functional domains, preparing the way for life to fill them. Each stage is declared good.

In this series we lean into a more technical reading of certain Hebrew words. Modern translations often smooth phrasing for general readability, a practical choice that serves most readers well. A question lingers across the church: “Where are the miracles and healings we read about in Acts?”

The common reply comes quickly: the early church was more faithful, more righteous, more spiritually mature. They paid a price later generations have refused.

This answer comforts. It is also demonstrably false.

Open the New Testament and examine the people through whom God moved in power. James and John sought the two highest seats in the kingdom while the cross remained ahead of them (Mark 10:35–41). Peter, the rock, fell into ethnic hypocrisy in Antioch and drew Barnabas with him (Galatians 2:11–14). The Jerusalem church allowed Greek-speaking widows to be overlooked while Hebrew widows were cared for (Acts 6:1). Pride, cowardice, tribalism, and favoritism appear openly.

Yet through these same flawed vessels the dead were raised, the lame walked, and entire cities turned to the Lord.

Moral superiority, then, is not the variable that releases kingdom power.

For centuries, the visible church has labored to widen the camp, secure respectability, and build institutions that keep everyone safely inside. The desire remains: the water of purification without anyone standing in the smoke, resurrection power without anyone becoming unclean for the sake of the dying.

This refusal to pay the red-heifer price, not lack of fasting, correct doctrine, or abstract faith, is the primary reason sustained, public miracles remain scarce.

The Cost Named by the Lord

Jesus stated the terms plainly: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate by comparison his father and mother, wife and children, brothers, and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26–33).
